“We give out a Spirit Award and it is for people that we feel have come a long way and worked really hard and overcome obstacles. And you certainly have done that,” said Amy Brokaw, MSN, BSN, RN and Madonna case manager.
Jared Clawson receives much-deserved spirit from his Madonna team for the hard work he’s put into his recovery after a work-related accident.
“All the nurses, doctors, aides are great. … for them to have that, I didn’t expect it, I didn’t think I was that great of a patient,” laughs Jared. “I’m happy to go home. It’s been … it hasn’t been that bad here.” (Everyone laughs.)
Here at Madonna’s Omaha Campus Jared’s been recovering from a gunshot wound to the back he suffered in January while on the job at Nebraska Furniture Mart. Still unable to eat solid foods, his initial goals once home are simple: spending time with family and eating.
“I can’t wait to have a cheeseburger again and some onion rings, a vanilla shake. That’s probably going to be my first meal when I can actually have a meal,” said Jared.
As his body continues to heal, Jared says unforgettable moments during rehabilitation stay included meeting Harlem Globetrotters’ Waun “the Shot” Versher. Moving forward this experience has taught him patience and … “Stay positive. That’s the only way you’re going to get better faster. I’ve tried to keep the most positive attitude, through this whole thing. Even though you have days/moments when you’re just like, ‘leave me alone.’ Little frustrations. Trying to stay positive is my best advice,” said Jared.
