Toddler motivates Wichita mom in her brain injury recovery

LINCOLN, Neb. (MADONNA)–A Wichita, Kansas, mother is recovering from a traumatic brain injury stemming from a car accident back in May.
Nauteria Palmer is working hard during therapy every day so that when she’s reunited with her two-year-old son, she’ll have the strength and mobility to play with him.
“Get the birds. That’s okay, try and get the birds.”
An interactive video game involving birds and private ships is helping Nauteria Palmer regain movement in her right arm. “Good job. All the way across your body.”
Called the Armeo Spring, patients maneuver a joystick that has an adjustable spring inside it—making it easier or harder to control. Attached to a trolley and paired with an activity on the screen, the technology allows for a fun way to increase range of motion, control and coordination.
But that’s not all.
“This is a great way to work on divided attention, to work on visual scanning. But also processing speed and reaction time,” said Jessica Vigil, occupational therapist for Madonna Rehabilitation Hospitals.
Time Nauteria needs to recover from a traumatic brain injury resulting from a car accident.
Gaining strength and stamina with every step she takes. Each therapy session helps to gain strength for the day she’s able to go home to Wichita, Kansas, and her two-year-old son, Naheim.
“We’ll I’m just doing everything I can in here so I can get back to him,“ said Nauteria Palmer, traumatic brain injury survivor.
